In Memoriam: Kent Edwards, AIA

July 25, 2019

Post Category | News

Age 69 (though age never mattered!), Kent Edwards, AIA, of Pittsburgh and Confluence, passed away on July 20, surrounded by his family after a valiant medical struggle.  Kent was born in Sharon, PA, to Reese and Geraldine Edwards, both deceased.   He attended Kent State University, graduating with a double major in Philosophy and Architecture.  After 30 years as an architect in Ohio and Pennsylvania, where he served as President of AIA Pittsburgh, Kent and his wife, Cathy, started a community development consulting firm.  He was also a proud member of Leadership Pittsburgh, Class VII.

Kent will be missed terribly by his wife, partner, and great love of 18 years, Cathy McCollom.   He sadly leaves behind his sons Ben (Sarah) and Adam (Kate), daughter Jennifer Dunn, his two adored grandchildren, Lily and Hunter, and many members of a loving family.

Kent was a man of few words, though each one counted – many delivered with a wicked sense of humor.   His friends know that they are lucky to have had him in their lives – while he made them feel special to be in his –  sharing in his wit, his observations of life, and challenging the world and its ethos that surrounded us all.

Friends were received Wednesday, July 24, at the George A. Thoma Funeral Home, Inc. 10418 Perry Highway Wexford, Pa 15090 – and a Memorial Service was private.

Charitable giving was important to Kent.    The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Kent’s honor to the charity of your choice.

In 1984, I was a young 20 year old, starting my CAD career at American Bridge. Kent was not my immediate supervisor, but I was loaned out to the Architecture Dept. and work on One Mellon Bank Center and Tower 49 in New York. Kent was very patience, understanding and informative with me in my 1st job. Thank you, Kent, RIP

    Dear Cathy,
I am so sorry for this news! I can honestly say that I enjoyed every single interaction that I had with Kent over many year including the highlight years; when we first moved into Penn 29 and he had a desk here amongst the collaborative. He was so generous with his knowledge and humour. Another highlight was working together on the Community Design Center and in the West End of Pittsburgh! Our entire City is a better place for Kent’s having graced these three rivers!

    Cathy,
I’m so sorry for your loss. He will be missed by many. I enjoyed my brief talks with Kent over the past few years. His quick wit and dry sense humor were perfect- and it still makes me smile.
