Pacific Sanctuary Renovation
This project began by saving a dilapidated church from demolition. Stone falling from the façade, stairwells that resembled waterfalls and a roof that allowed you to see the stars from inside. But that was the easy part. The program goals of daycare/community center and church, and the existing historic building all pulled the project in different ways. Additional goals of improving fire separation, MEP systems, and accessibility within a limited budget added to the challenge. Creative solutions were needed to build a space with beauty alongside multiple functions. The finished product is undeniably historic and while also modern and functional. A thriving church congregation gathers on Sundays, and on Monday the building is busy with daycare children while staff of all the building tenants work in their offices above. Fully renovated, the building is ready to anchor this neighborhood corner for another 130 years.
