Red Phoenix Community Center
Penn Hills Red Phoenix is an organization comprised of educators, community members and local business leaders supporting youth in Penn Hills. The diverse community has a critical need for safe spaces outside of school. After the local YMCA closed its doors, Red Phoenix purchased the abandoned Aster St. Public Library with the goal of renovating the structure and site to create a new Community Center. Connection to the client was through Penn State University Extension, who also provided support through Specialists in Community Vitality. Catering to young people, the Center will provide safe, supervised spaces for doing homework, learning technology, and engaging in sports, performances, and social activities in flexible indoor/outdoor areas.
The conceptual work presented is being used by Red Phoenix to assess scope and funding opportunities. This project showcases the community and environmental benefits from modernizing the existing structures that make up the fabric of our communities.
