Brenna Martin-Shaffer, AIA, Associate at Gensler and AIA Pittsburgh Board First Vice President, was elected to the inaugural cohort of the Next to Lead program in 2021.

From Brenna:
“The AIA N2L program is more than a leadership initiative. It cultivates a community of advocates, allies, and supporters who are committed to learning from one another and growing together. During my time in the program, it created a welcoming environment where open dialogue, honest reflection, and meaningful conversations could flourish in ways that are rare within our profession. In an industry where competing priorities constantly demand our attention, N2L provides an opportunity to slow down, invest in personal and collective growth, and build lasting relationships with colleagues dedicated to strengthening the profession.
Among the program’s greatest strengths are its emphasis on expanding networks, building trust, and elevating underrepresented voices. Rather than simply encouraging conversation, N2L challenges participants to turn dialogue into action and recognize the crucial role each of us plays in shaping the future of architecture. I have tremendous respect for the remarkable women in my cohort, whose leadership, courage, and optimism continue to inspire meaningful change. Connecting deeply with racially and ethnically underrepresented women architects across the country broadened my perspective and reinforced the criticality of diverse experiences and approaches to leadership in architecture.

I completed the N2L program with a stronger sense of purpose, a deeper appreciation for my own strengths, and a renewed conviction to create opportunities for more voices to be heard. The experience reinforced that meaningful progress requires deliberate action and sustained commitment that will not happen on its own. By challenging existing norms, advocating for greater inclusion, and embracing a broader range of perspectives, we can strengthen our profession, better serve our communities and clients, and ensure architecture continues to evolve for generations to come.”

Parva Markiw, AIA, Project Architect at DesignGroup and AIA Pittsburgh EDI Committee Co-Chair, graduated with the 2024-2025 Next to Lead cohort.

From Parva:
“The AIA Next to Lead program was a transformative experience that challenged me to rethink what leadership looks like. My biggest takeaway was learning to lead by embracing my strengths instead of trying to fit a traditional leadership mold. Through the program, I realized that qualities I once viewed as weaknesses—particularly empathy—are actually some of my greatest strengths. I learned that listening, building relationships, and understanding others are not limitations but fundamental aspects of my leadership style.
The coaching, self-reflection, and honest conversations throughout the program gave me the confidence to lean into those strengths rather than shy away from them. Just as meaningful were the relationships I built with my cohort. We formed a supportive network that I know will continue well beyond the program and throughout our careers.

Most importantly, the Next to Lead program taught me to lean into discomfort, face challenges head-on, and embrace opportunities that feel intimidating. It gave me greater confidence in who I am as a leader and reinforced that authentic leadership comes from leading with purpose, empathy, and a willingness to grow. It is an experience I am incredibly grateful for and one that continues to shape both my professional and personal journey.”
