What Should Pittsburgh Look Like in 2050?

July 12, 2016

Post Category | News

DP2015-YASCPittsburgh isn’t just growing again; it’s thriving. It’s a center of technology, innovation, culture, medicine and education, and has been recognized for its environmental stewardship and sustainable design practices. However, it is not a city without its challenges.

The Young Architects Studio Competition (YASC) is a part of AIA Pittsburgh’s annual Design Pittsburgh, a celebration of architecture and design awards competition. This year’s YASC – Vision PGH 2050 – asks you to design a solution for a resilient Pittsburgh of the future.  The City was chosen as a member of the 100 Resilient Cities, whose purpose is to help cities become more resilient to the physical, social, and economic challenges that are a growing part of the 21st century. Through this process air quality issues, inequality, public health challenges, flash floods, infrastructure failure, and extreme weather were identified as the chronic stresses and acute shocks that challenge and threaten our city. What creative design solutions will help Pittsburgh become a truly resilient city as it moves forward?

Entrants are limited to the City of Pittsburgh and may take a macroscopic or microscopic approach to this challenge. Possible approaches may include but are not limited to design solutions for housing, public transit, complete streets, vibrant open spaces, commercial centers, industrial developments adaptive reuses, waste and stormwater management, and energy conservation methods. The approaches are endless and we encourage entrants to be as creative and innovative as possible!

Learn more about eligibility and how to apply, and start thinking about your solution today! Looking for some inspiration? Take a look at YASCs of the Past and see what other emerging professionals have created for past design challenges.

Design Pittsburgh Call for Entries

Each October AIA Pittsburgh presents Design Pittsburgh, a month long celebration of architecture and design, which is centered around the juried Design Awards competition. The Call for Submissions has been announced and you are invited to participate. Architects from across the region submit projects to be part of the celebration, and your project will be featured in an architectural design exhibition, the juried competition, public voting for the People’s Choice Award, a gala for more than 400 members, affiliates, design enthusiasts, and guests, and a ceremony recognizing the winners of the prestigious AIA Pittsburgh Design Awards.

The Design Awards is a juried design competition open to AIA members and firms whose principal(s) are members of AIA Pittsburgh. The mission of the awards is to recognize and honor architects and designers, and promote excellence, innovation, and achievement in the craft of architecture. All Design Award submissions are available online for viewing and voting.

Learn more about the submission categories and criteria here. Submission requests must be received no later than Friday, August 19th with project submissions due the following Friday, August 26th.
