In Memoriam: Anthony Lee Wolfe, AIA

October 9, 2014

Post Category | News

AWolfeAnthony Lee Wolfe, age 88, of Naples, FL, passed away on Monday, September 22, 2014. Husband of the late Marianne Leas Wolfe; father of Lawrence Wolfe and Sandra Wolfe Wood (husband, James Wolfe Wood); grandfather of Corlett Wolfe Wood and Andrew Wolfe Wood. Predeceased by brothers, Lawrence and Lindsay.

Born June 5, 1926, to Mary Clark Wolfe and Laurence Wolfe, Anthony “Tony” grew up in Ben Avon, PA and finished high school in Arlington, Virginia, where his father served as project architect on the Pentagon. A veteran of WWII, Tony attended Swarthmore College and Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University), graduating in architecture. In 1950, he married Marianne Leas (who would go on to become stated clerk of Pittsburgh Presbytery) and they settled in Ben Avon. Tony and his brother, Larry, took over their father’s architectural practice following his death in 1953, and the firm of Lawrence & Anthony Wolfe Architects designed many of Pittsburgh’s best-known civic buildings, among them the Aviary, the Aquarium, and the Underground Zoo.

In addition, Tony’s rich architectural legacy includes the design of numerous churches, schools, and residences around Western Pennsylvania; he also served as president of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Tony was admired as a consummate professional, great mentor, and all-around class act by his friends and colleagues.
