Bohlin Cywinski Jackson has been selected as the architect for the new Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science building at the Florida State University. Bringing together research studies in Meteorology, Oceanography, and GeoPhysics, this new 180,000 sf facility includes the prestigious Antarctic Marine Geology Research Facility, a one-of-a-kind facility with over 26,000 meters of Antarctic core samples. The new building will serve as an educational and research model for other Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related projects at FSU. Responding to primary pedestrian and vehicular circulation, the new building will create a gateway to the University. Along with the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, the firm is also finalizing plans for the new Frick Environmental Center in Pittsburgh’s Frick Park with construction scheduled to begin this fall. The building is projected to meet the Living Building Challenge, and one of three in Pittsburgh currently pursuing the rigorous certification. Additionally, the office is starting work with The Pennsylvania State University on the renovation of the Luerssen Building on the Berks County campus, which will upgrade the school’s science department and general-purpose classrooms to current levels of teaching, safety, and efficiency standards. Another project, The University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences, is under construction and expected to open in spring 2014. BCJ is working with the local Milwaukee firm, Continuum Architects, on the 100,000 sf addition to the existing Great Lakes WATER Institute. A flagship project, the design features TAKTL’s ultra high-density concrete panels, developed and manufactured locally in Pittsburgh.
The AIA-MBA Joint Committee announced that Luke Desmone, AIA is the recipient of the 2013 James Kling Fellowship Award. Desmone is the founding partner of Desmone & Associate Architects, a full-service architectural and interior design firm located in Lawrenceville. The James Kling Fellowship Award was established by the AIA-MBA Joint Committee to recognize those individuals who best exemplify collaboration between the design and constructor professions.
evolveEA has recently contributed to two publications addressing the next generation of thinking about sustainability and organizational evolution. Principal Christine Mondor, AIA authored the chapter “Building Up to Organizational Sustainability” for the book Constructing Green: The Social Structures of Sustainability. Additionally, the Journal of Green Building features evolveEA’s article, “The David Lawrence Convention Center: How Green Building Design and Operations Can Save Money, Drive Local Economic Opportunity, and Transform an Industry.” This article is a detailed case study of a two year post-occupancy evaluation of Pittsburgh’s convention center—largely recognized as one of the world’s greenest facilities.
Lami Grubb Architects, LP is pleased to announce that Paulette Burns has been promoted to the position of Principal. Wayne Chang has been named an Associate. Burns graduated from The Catholic University of America, and has been a valuable team member for nine years. Among other duties and responsibilities, she has developed and leads a nationally recognized retail design team that has a track record of designing over 150 projects a year across the country, including Hawaii and Puerto Rico, as well as projects in Canada, Mexico, Turkey and Dubai. Chang, a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, plays an integral role in the firm’s specialty retail and restaurant work, and provides innovative designs for his clients in airports, transit stations, and other locations across the USA.

Stantec has been selected to provide programming, master planning, and schematic design services for Geisinger Medical Center’s Cancer Institute on their Danville, Pennsylvania campus. Project work began in August 2013 and is led by design professionals from Stantec’s Pittsburgh office in coordination with Stantec’s Philadelphia team. Stantec will support Geisinger’s newly organized Radiation, Medical Oncology, and Imaging service lines serving patients in and around central Pennsylvania.

Adam Stadt, AIA of WTW Architects has been recognized as a registered architect following the successful completion of the architectural registration exam. During his six years with WTW, Stadt has been involved in a series of projects at Texas A&M University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, University of Nevada-Reno, Western State College of Colorado, and Duquesne University.
