Retiring Principal Kevin Wagstaff Reflects on Three Decades with PWWG Architects and the Firm’s Clear Path to Continued Growth
Pittsburgh-based PWWG Architects announced a change in firm leadership. Principal Kevin Wagstaff, AIA will step down from his position as shareholder with the firm at the end of March 2022, a role he has held since 2004. He will remain involved with projects currently under his leadership through December 2022 and retire at the end of the year.
Effective April 1st, under the proactive succession plan, current partners and long-term team members Anthony Pitassi, AIA (Managing Principal), Lisa Carver, AIA, and Brent Houck, AIA will take full control of firm management, day-to-day operations, and business development. Under Pitassi’s leadership, each will remain dedicated to their design and project-related work with the firm’s existing clients, and each will assume responsibility for projects for which Wagstaff is currently Principal-in-Charge.
Over 33 years of professional practice, Wagstaff also served as President of the Pittsburgh chapter of AIA, taught design studios at Savannah College of Art and Design and Carnegie Mellon University and led design for over 80 projects. Reflecting on his work at the firm, Wagstaff said he is especially proud of how PWWG’s projects—particularly current and recent work–have contributed to revitalization of neighborhoods throughout Pittsburgh. Among these are multiple projects in the Cultural District, the historic North Side, East Liberty, Lawrenceville, the Hill District, and Oakland.
Managing Principal Anthony Pitassi said, “Kevin has established deep trust with our clients in commercial, academic, and non-profit sectors on designs for new construction and reuse. Throughout his tenure, he has demonstrated creative problem solving and decisive leadership. And he has demonstrated how to arrive at inspiring, imaginative outcomes – balancing pragmatic concerns with aesthetics, and applying current and emerging best practices in building technology, project management, and sustainability. All of these have established Kevin’s legacy and the foundation for the firm’s growth and how we operate into the future.”

R3A Architecture’s Nuclear Innovation Commons at the Penn State University’s Main Campus Awarded 2021 IIDA PA/NJ/DE Design Award, Best of Education
R3A Architecture designed the 4,800 sf Nuclear Innovation Commons to offer a diverse landscape of spatial opportunities that would support various levels of interaction, enclosure and activity for students and faculty, all of which are supported by flexible furniture and plug and play technology. The Innovation Commons is anchored by the Nuclear Smart Lab which was designed more as a platform for learning than a classroom. Utilizing state of the art technology, the lab will be used to host nationally and internationally attended courses to expand the reach of the department. The material palette and form logic of the design was driven by nuclear symbolism, derived from studying iconography that would evoke the notion of nuclear. The IIDA jurors felt that this space brings together an interesting mix of elements, textures, and well-executed interiors; the seamless integration of technology and collaboration stand out, and the circulation path is strong and inviting.
R3A Architecture’s Arnold Palmer Learning Center Placed as Finalist for New Construction Under $5 Million by Master Builders’ Association of Western Pennsylvania, Inc.
R3A Architecture designed the Arnold Palmer Learning Center (APLC) to support educational programs that teach life skills and character education through the game of golf. To this end, the design of the new facility was driven by inclusivity, to welcome people of all backgrounds within Pittsburgh and its surrounding communities. At 13,700 square feet, the APLC provides space for retail, education, training, socializing, and meeting. Spatially the interior was designed around central “collector” space. This three-story tall space is anchored by a forum stair, which provides a place for visitors to socialize or auditorium seating for students to sit for lessons. The primary objective of the “collector” was to enhance visual connectivity between all levels of the building. From the exterior, the second level terrace allows for views down into the collector creating further interconnection between inside and outside thereby enhancing visibility. Contractor on the project was Massaro Corporation.
