The Best for Workers list includes businesses that earned a Workers score in the top 10 percent of more than 1,800 Certified B Corporations on the B Impact Assessment. The full assessment measures a company’s impact on its workers, community, customers and the environment. The 124 winning companies in the Workers category come from 14 industries and 15 countries.
The Ecodistrict Pivot Plan for the Borough of Millvale has won a Planning Excellence Award from the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association. evolveEA led the planning team in partnership with the Millvale Community Development Corporation, Millvale Community Library, Millvale Borough, New Sun Rising, Sisters of Saint Francis at Mt. The American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA) has announced that GBBN Architects Principal Todd Dunaway has earned his Bo
ard Certificate in healthcare architecture. Dunaway recently passed an accredited examination, which assesses the knowledge and understanding of architects who practice as healthcare specialists. He joins the selective ranks of only 400 ACHA colleagues in the US and Canada who have received this architectural credential. Todd is a healthcare client leader and senior project manager in GBBN’s Pittsburgh office. He brings proven experience in delivering transformative healthcare solutions to his clients. He has participated in many award-winning healthcare projects across the United States and is dedicated to providing quality service to clients. Todd is also certified in evidence-based design and a registered architect.
Hayes Design Group – Architects is featured in a recent Eneref Institute report for its role in incorporating energy-efficient lighting and daylighting into a recent school construction project at West Allegheny School District. Eneref Institute, a research and advocacy organization for sustainable development has chosen the Wilson Elementary School construction project as a showcase project to demonstrate the benefits of natural interior daylight in classrooms versus artificial electric light. The Hayes Design Group was chosen for the project because of their extensive experience in K-12 school design work and creative ability to resolve unique design challenges. IKM’s Specifications and Constructability Specialist, Bob Bailey, AIA recently won a Communications Award at the recent Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), convention for his outstanding effort in the communication of CSI related topics and activities. This was awarded for all his researching, designing, editing and publishing of a professional, educational and informative newsletter that supports the values of the Pittsburgh Chapter, Mid-Atlantic Region. Bob has also been asked to be on the editorial board of The Construction Specifier, CSI’s national magazine.

MacLachlan, Cornelius & Filoni is excited to announce that Timothy L. Powers, AIA recently rejoined the firm as Vice President and Principal. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Architecture in 1980, Tim spent the early part of his career planning and designing healthcare, performing arts, and commercial facilities. Tim’s return to MCF will expand the firm’s leadership and project portfolio, particularly in the healthcare market segment.
The Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation has selected MacLachlan, Cornelius & Filoni to complete the $3 million restoration of the historic Wilkinsburg Train Station. Located at Hay St. & Ross Ave. in Wilkinsburg’s central business district, 
the vacant train station building sits adjacent to the East Busway and Penn Avenue, which together bring over 50,000 people through Wilkinsburg each day. The WCDC and partners envision the Train Station building as a potential home to a restaurant or café, bike share program, Port Authority kiosk, display space for local artists and organizations, and more. The WCDC Holding Co. will develop a tenanting strategy once the building is updated and ready to be leased. The fundraising campaign for the project continues through the end of this year. Katie LaForest joined mossArchitects in 2011 and was promoted to Associate in 2015. Katie has been responsible for the design of several residential, office and mixed-use projects. She has made significant contributions to each project through her ability to quickly become facile in working with complicated issues facing the design process.
Nathaniel Rice joined mossArchitects in 2012 as an Architectural Intern and was promoted to Project Designer in 2015. Nathaniel has been responsible for the design of several private residences and renovations – both modern and traditional styles, as well as commercial, hotel, and mixed-use projects.
mossArchitects is also pleased to announce Eric Overmyer joins the firm, having relocated to Pittsburgh from Raleigh, North Carolina. Eric graduated from the College of Design at North Carolina State University with a Master of Architecture degree in 2013.

RSSC Architecture is pleased to announce that their new Board of Directors will be Ronald S. Gigler, AIA, Bruce P. Pollock, AIA and Eric S. Green, AIA. Ralph Sterzinger, AIA and Steve Cupcheck will continue to be a part of RSSC Architecture, focusing their efforts on client development. Ron Gigler, Principal since 2004, has been with the firm for 28 years and Bruce Pollock, Principal since 2013, has been with the firm for 19 years. Eric Green, Principal since 2013, has been with the firm for 15 years.
WTW is designing a green garage on Pittsburgh’s North Shore for the Stadium Authority of the City of Pittsburgh (SACP) and is targeting a Parksmart Gold Certification once completed. Parksmart, (formerly known as Green Garage Certification) is the world’s only rating system that defines, measures and recognizes high-performing, sustainable garages. Completion of the $24.5 million project is expected by the spring of next year. It will be a sustainably designed transportation hub with convenient protected bike parking for up to 100 bicyclists, and easy access to nearby LRT and Bike Share stations. Other features include storm water bioretention areas, daylighting sensors and LED lighting with occupancy sensors throughout the facility.
WTW is also designing a series of buildings for Oxford Development Company’s 3 Crossings projects in the Strip District. The latest 3 Crossings project is Riverfront West, a 136,000 square-foot office building located near the corner of 26th Street and Railroad Street adjacent to the Allegheny River. The six-story building is scheduled to open in the spring of 2018. Bike racks and 72 covered parking spaces on the lowest level are planned for the $43 million project. The exterior of the building will complement the finishes that are being used in the other 3 Crossings projects. Interior commons areas will include a central lobby, and an outdoor plaza area for use by all tenants.
Penn State University’s Department of Mechanical & Nuclear Engineering of the College of Engineering has hired WTW Architects to design a new collaborative learning space, the E-Commons on the main public level of the Reber Building located on the University Park campus. WTW previously completed a feasibility study for the E-Commons project with the Department of Mechanical & Nuclear Engineering in 2013. The $1.7 million project will be completed for the beginning of the 2017 fall semester.
