This summer solstice event will take place at Chatham University’s Eden Hall. We will hear from Sandy Mendler, AIA, the design principal bringing this project to life. Buildings are now operational, allowing us to see this young campus as a net-zero loop-closing model for 22nd century living. Aside from a presentation about the vision, master planning and architecture, we will have a tour of the campus and some completed buildings.
Conventional building design presumes a reliance upon imported energy. Christine Mondor, AIA and Charles Rosenblum will each show how integrated design accounts for the resources sites offer, as well as minimizing unwanted environmental conditions, exploring climate data, site characteristics and other tools to conduct a site resource inventory, which in turn is used to inform the building design and reduce building energy load. This session will set the stage for future sessions addressing specific strategies in more detail by addressing the question, “What do we need to know in order to create an informed design?” and examining the synergies and tradeoffs of major design decisions.
- Produce a building form and orientation strategy that is responsive to site and climatic factors.
- Explain why climate responsive design reduces the energy load of a building.
- List the site and climate factors that impact a building’s performance.
- Understand what architects need to know in order to create an informed building design
- Examine the synergies and tradeoffs of major design decisions.
