Design Pittsburgh is a celebration of architecture and design, and honors those who create it. Design Pittsburgh raises the profile of architects as critical resources and industry experts in the Pittsburgh region. Through exhibits and events, this program provides excellent exposure of architects’ work to a wide variety of audiences – including potential customers. This year we had: 1,000+ people visited the exhibit during the gallery crawl, PechaKucha Night, and Storey Telling 570 attended the Design Awards Ceremony & Gala 4,582 votes for the People’s Choice Award, a 20% increase from last year 55,990+ unique page views throughout the Design Pittsburgh promotional period Additionally, Design Pittsburgh highlights the importance of good design in our region – and how our members, sponsors, partners, and...

Gulf Tower Building Tour

On January 31, 2013  AIA Pittsburgh’s Young Architects Forum took a tour of the Gulf Tower roof lighting system.  The tour, organized by the Green Building Alliance, included a presentation by C&C Lighting LLC., the lighting design firm who recently upgraded the 1932 building’s lighting system from a 1970 neon light design to its current multicolor LED system.  The lights that top the Gulf Tower typically display current weather conditions, such as barometric pressure, temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity.  During special events like the Fourth of July or for a Pirates victory, a specially pre-programmed light show can be triggered by the building owner by smart phone, or by the foyer reception clerk.  The lighting system upgrade, in addition...

NCARB Outreach Event

On January 22, 2013, as part of their ongoing outreach effort, The National Council of Architecture Registration Boards (NCARB) visited Carnegie Mellon University. Assistant Director of IDP Nick Serfass, NCARB, LEED AP, PMP, was on-hand for two distinct presentations on all things related to licensure — “Designing Your Future: Creating Value in Your Career” and “NCARB and You: IDP, ARE, and Certification.” CMU’s School of Architecture hosted the event, which also included a networking reception complete with snacks from Pittsburgh Popcorn, for students and emerging professionals from AIA Pittsburgh’s Young Architects Forum. PechaKucha Night Pittsburgh Vol. 12

PechaKucha Night Pittsburgh vol. 12 was a huge success! Thank you to all who attended, presented, and enjoyed, and thank you to the Union Project for hosting us! We had a total of nine presenters, each with a unique presentation. The first presenter was Brigette Davitt, and her presentation was entitled “Chimera”.  The second presenter of the evening was Mike Roy, whose presentation was entitled “Do Worse to Do Better”. Third up was Raymond Bowman, a member of the Young Architects Forum, presenting his “Electric Cars and Roadside Architecture”. The last presentation before intermission was Mike Schiller, CEO of the Green Building Alliance.
